Feedback:

Yom Hadash's performance at our university was incredible! The band's music drew students as well as the surrounding community to our Hillel House. They gave a performance that was vibrant, moving and inspirational! B'hatzlecha!

JON NELSON (Lead Vocals, Bass & Acoustic Guitar)

For the last decade, Jon has been a mainstay in modern Jewish music. Having performed close to 900 concerts for audiences of all ages, his music is heard on radio rotations in the United States, Canada, Israel and beyond. A composer and performer whose songs tastefully blend the rock and roll he grew up with the Jewish traditions that were passed down to him, Jon’s unique and interactive performance style, deep connection with his audiences, original songs and liturgical settings have become the cornerstone of Yom Hadash's success. Having performed at Shuls, JCCs, Festivals and Corporate Events, Jon recently realized a dream by performing a private concert for some of the Boston Red Sox Player’s kids and getting to throw out a first pitch at Fenway Park!

A native of New Bedford, MA, Jon graduated from UMASS Amherst and has a Masters Degree in Education from Cambridge College. As the founder and main composer in Yom Hadash, Jon’s music has appeared on several nationally distributed original CDs and music compilations. His original song “Can You Feel It”, released by the Jon Nelson Band, charted in several European markets a few years back. His heart felt composition "Jerusalem," a song he wrote after first visiting Israel in the mid 1990's, was featured on a promotional DVD used to inspire and involve participants for a national camping movement.

Jon has released six CDs, with music that crosses genres and boundaries. In addition to his work with Yom Hadash, Jon also works part time as a Cantorial Soloist and Youth Educator in the Boston area. An innovator in his field, he’s happy to be writing and sharing the music he loves with communities everywhere. He and his family reside in Rhode Island.

JOHN DORIZZI (Drums & Percussion)

With 14 years of professional drumming under his belt, John Dorizzi’s innovative and solid approach is a main ingredient of Yom Hadash’s sound. Growing up in Southern Maine, John formed his first band at age eleven. At the time a self-taught drummer, he played in local bands throughout junior high and high school. After graduating, he studied music at the University of New Hampshire and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. One look at his resume and it’s no wonder why he’s one of the most in-demand drummers in New England. He has worked with many well known bands, artists, musicians and producers such as Division St., David Brown (Billy Joel), Anthony Resta (Collective Soul, Shawn Mullins, etc), Bobby Keyes (Jerry Lee Lewis) David Minehan (Areosmith, and Paul Westerburg), Duke & the Drivers and many others.

In his previous role as the founder and drummer for the critically acclaimed band "Division Street," John released three albums while touring the United States and seeing our country state by state. He is now a "first call" studio drummer on the East Coast, developing his own powerful and innovative style. With a drumming technique that combines power and finesse, John is known for finding the right feel and then executing it in rock solid time

In addition to his work in Yom Hadash, John is currently the percussion accompanist of The Boston Conservatory of Dance as well as a freelance drum instructor in several Massachusetts communities and schools. John brings tremendous drive, enthusiasm, creativity and attention to detail to everything he does, whether it's recording, touring, or teaching. He and his family live in Massachusetts.

MICHAEL GAUVIN SMITH (Electric Guitar & Vocals)

Michael Gauvin Smith has been playing music professionally since his teens. His musicality, vocal harmonies and beautiful slide guitar work have become a staple of Yom Hadash’s innovative sound. Before touring with Yom Hadash, Mike was the creative force behind the Mudhens, one of the most acclaimed and highest selling bands to come out of the East Coast in the last two decades. Mike also currently tours with The Flutie Brother’s Band (featuring Doug and Darren Flutie of Pro Football fame). One of the most in demand session guitarists on the East Coast, Mike has performed onstage with members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, N’Sync, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Foreigner, The Doobie Brothers, Run DMC, The Willie Nelson Band & the band Boston. He was also a touring member of The Bay City Rollers and auditioned for the permanent guitar spot in The Red Hot Chili Peppers a few years back.

Mike has sold out shows from coast to coast and has performed at events for six Super Bowls sharing the bill with music luminaries such as Neil Young, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley and many others! As a songwriter Mike has had international success with songs placed on popular television shows, compilations & critically acclaimed original CDs. He also composed the Saturday Night Football League Theme used by the Canadian Football League. A lover of all languages, Mike is fluent in many of them! He and his wife reside in the Boston area.

Mike is endorsed by and plays Reverend guitars.

GEORGE SIMON (Bass Guitar)

Jon's friend and band mate since high school, George completes the solid backline for Yom Hadash's live shows. George began playing electric guitar and acoustic upright bass at age 12. Heavily influenced by music from the early 60's and 70's, his style and musical sensibilities draw greatly from the music he loves; the early era of rock and roll, Motown, soul, and British pop. George has played in several bands throughout the US and Yom Hadash is thrilled that's he's making music with them. A graduate of Seton Hall University, George now resides in Boston where he spends his spare time watching his favorite sports teams and developing real estate.

TED ARMSTRONG (Piano & B3 Organ)

A graduate of the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ted brings strong, eclectic credentials to the Yom Hadash. A nationally touring, in demand keyboardist for the past fifteen years, his B3 organ and piano add greatly to the band's sound. In addition to performing in the popular Boston bands Voodoo Sol and Roadside Prophet, Ted spent over a decade touring with the acclaimed Boston-based blues band Walk That Walk. A blues stalwart, Ted has shared the stage with Blues legends Bo Diddley, Carey Bell and Johnnie Johnson, and has opened for Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson, Son Seals, Johnny Copeland, Levon Helm, and many other Blues greats. Ted is also a member of The Flutie Brothers Band. (Featuring Football great Doug Flutie) and has recently toured with the current lineup of the 70's super group, The Bay City Rollers.
